About Magpie Brûlé

Magpie Brûlé is a politics and current events blog, focusing on Canada and the issues of the day. The Editor-in-Chief of Magpie Brûlé is Cam Holmstrom. The name Magpie Brûlé is an amalgam of two terms; “Magpie” come from the Newcastle United Football Team in England, known as the Magpies (Cam’s favourite football team) while “Brûlé” comes from the term “Bois Brûlé”, which was a name associated with Métis peoples from Red River. Put together, they speak to the spirit of this blog; being proud of to be who we are and where we come from, while embracing the new on our own terms.

Cam is the Founder and Principal of Niipaawi Strategies, a Public Affairs firm based in Eastern Ontario. He is a trusted voice and a sought-after political pundit, appearing regularly on SiriusXM Canada Talks, CFRA Ottawa, CityNews radio nationally, CTV News Channel, CP24, and in print throughout the country.

Born and raised in Kenora, Ontario, Cam worked on Parliament Hill for nearly a decade, working for three New Democrat Members of Parliament. While working in the NDP caucus, he worked on the Natural Resources, International Co-operation, Post-Secondary Education and Aboriginal Intergovernmental Affairs portfolios. He has extensive experience working in the Natural Resources, Education and Indigenous Rights policy areas. He is a graduate of Lakehead University, with a B.A in French and a minor in History, and a B.Ed. and is a certified teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers.

Since 2006, Cam has worked on more than a dozen election campaigns in three provinces, along with three leadership campaigns. Prior to working on Parliament Hill, he was also the author of the politics blog and podcast “Peterborough Politics”, from 2006 until 2009. He is Red River Métis, born and raised in Treaty 3 territory in Northwestern Ontario and is deeply proud of his roots.
